Protest against privatization of garbage collection

Around 200 citizens protested in front of the town hall of Sint-Niklaas against the privatization of the garbage collection, planned by the governing coalition of N-VA, sp.a and Groen. Earlier this month, a referendum was held about this issue. More than 80% of the voters voted against the privatization, but the mayor ignored the results argueing that the attendance of the referendum was too low (15 percent of the population voted). The protesters claim the referendum was boycotted, since there were no polling stations in the center of the city, which may have partly caused the low attendance.
